Green Jobs in Uttarakhand: How Centum Created Opportunities For Youth via New Skilling Courses

The state of Uttarakhand is appreciated for its scenic beauty. However, it is also known to be a state where the youth face challenges due to lack of employment and learning opportunities. A significant step to remove this challenge was initiated in October 2016 when Centum Learning partnered Uttarakhand Skill Development Mission (UKSDM) to set up a Multi-Skill Development Centre for to provide training for Green jobs. The center is expected to play a significant role in enabling and mobilizing Uttarakhand youth to make them employable and work ready.

The Centum Multi-Skill Development Centre will offer skilling in only one job role – Solar Photo-Voltaic Installer – ‘Suryamitra’ which has a very high demand in the market. The ‘Suryamitra job role’ comes under ‘Green jobs’ that contribute to preserve or restore the environment. It is the need of the hour as the renewable energy sector is likely to have over two million green jobs in the next 10 years.

Sanjeev Duggal, CEO and MD, Centum Learning shared his thoughts regarding the Centre saying – “I strongly believe that skilling in India is akin to evangelizing. We have been actively involved in mobilizing youth in various parts of India for a long time now. But this is the first time that we are venturing into Uttarakhand, keeping in mind the high literacy rate of youth where women are almost at par with men as far as literacy is concerned.”

The Centre will be interviewing youth to shortlist and train candidates in different batches spanning three months. Infrastructure at the state-of-the-art Solar lab includes Digital Earth Resistance Tester, Digital Clamp Meter and safety equipment like Nose Mask, Harness. Centum Learning has designated staff for counselling the youth, in order to provide comprehensive information about the program
